WINERY
BACKGROUND
Finca Antigua is the latest project
by the renowned Martínez Bujanda Family that they
have initiated in the central part of Spain. Here the family
will continue their philosophy of producing the highest
quality wines from grapes grown cultivated exclusively in
their own vineyards. The family purchased the fifteen year
old vineyards in 1999 and were so impressed with the quality
of the grapes from this vineyard that they immediately set
out to plan the construction of a brand new winery to make
the most of their spectacular fruit.
THE VINEYARDS
The Finca Antigua Estate encompasses
over 2500 acres in total and of that; 679 acres are planted
to grapes. The average age of the vines is over 15 years
old and the following varietals are planted: Cabernet Sauvignon,
Tempranillo, Merlot, Syrah, Viura and Petit Verdot. The
site itself has numerous advantages when it comes to growing
grapes. Those advantages include the altitude of the vineyard,
the soil composition and the soil depth. At an average of
over 2,500 feet above sea level, Finca Antigua enjoys cool
nights and hot days during the period from mid-August to
mid-September. This ensures a slower ripening, adding complexity
to the final wines. The soil is has a high content of calcium
carbonate, an active limestone content of approximately
13% and a low level of organic material. The cultivated
ground has an average depth of about three feet. These conditions
give the Finca Antigua Estate tremendous advantages over
surrounding vineyards and combine to yield bold, powerful
wines.

VINIFICATION
The facility at Finca Antigua was
completed in time for the 2001 vintage. It is a state-of-the-art
facility that has the added advantage of being located in
the impressive single vineyard estate itself. Thus, grapes
are just a few minutes in going from harvest to crushing
and elaboration.
